On the Intertextual and Terminological Translation of Old Georgian Ecclesiastical Literature

Abstract

The translation of a text must be preceded by a preparatory period, which involves the intertextual and terminological study of the original. The translation must preserve, as much as possible, the traces of primary sources cited, paraphrased, or interpreted in the original, for which it is essential to consider the accumulated information, experience, and existing traditions. In our case, the English translations of the works of Tbel Abuserisdze (hymnographic trilogy, hagiographic and paschal writings) must preserve the intertextual parallels identified during the study of the original, for which we must use the English translations of authoritative primary sources (Bibliology, exegetical, theological, hagiographic, hymnographic, canonical, and paschal literature). To achieve a high degree of adequacy in intertextual translation, it is essential to adhere to the terminological models present in the original (be it ecclesiastical, theological, or culturological terminological equivalences).
